Grocery Store Finds: January 2018

New year, new grocery store finds.
Grocery Store Finds via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #grocerystorefinds #rdchat #rdapproved #healthy
I’ve been getting some great feedback from my grocery store finds! Thank you to all those who have commented, emailed, or messaged me. I really enjoy paroozing the aisles at the grocery store and finding new items to try and share here. As always, I am always open to ideas and suggestions. If you have a product you love and want to see it in this series, let me know!

Kodiak Cakes Minute Muffins

Grocery Store Finds from a Registered Dietitians via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #rdchat #rdapproved #wellness #supermarket #grocery #healthy #dietitian Kodiak Cakes Minute Muffins
I’ve written about Kodiak Cakes before, but now they have these Minute Muffins. All you have to do is add water, microwave for a minute, and you have yourself a muffin. I like to pump mine up with whisking in an egg for an adding punch of protein and top with fruit.

Mighty Sesame Co Tahini

Grocery Store Finds from a Registered Dietitians via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #rdchat #rdapproved #wellness #supermarket #grocery #healthy #dietitian Might Sesame Co. Tahini
This is by far the creamiest tahini I have ever tried. I love that Might Sesame Co. Tahini comes in a squeeze bottle. It makes it easier to use. Looking for a recipe with tahini? Try my Creamy Lemon Tahini Dressing.

Delighted by Dessert Hummus

Grocery Store Finds from a Registered Dietitians via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #rdchat #rdapproved #wellness #supermarket #grocery #healthy #dietitian Dessert Hummus
I’ve made my own dessert hummus before, but guys this Delighted by Dessert Hummus is by far creamier than what I’ve ever made. I loved the sweet snickerdoodle flavor. I’ve been dunking strawberries in this dessert hummus on repeat for my evening snack lately.

Puroast Coffee

Grocery Store Finds from a Registered Dietitians via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #rdchat #rdapproved #wellness #supermarket #grocery #healthy #dietitian Puroast Coffee
I was intrigued by Puroast Coffee. They sent me a sample of their low acidic coffee to try. I usually add a little splash of milk to my coffee in the morning, but this was the first time I could actually drink it completely black. It is very smooth and much less bitter. Puroast has 70 percent less acidity than any other coffee. My day doesn’t start without a cup of coffee.

Simple Mills Muffin Mix

Grocery Store Finds from a Registered Dietitians via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #rdchat #rdapproved #wellness #supermarket #grocery #healthy #dietitian Simple Mills
Simple Mills, I don’t think you make a product I don’t like. I wish I could cook and bake everything from scratch, but let’s be real, I’m busy! I have no shame in my box mix game, especially when it’s packed with simple and wholesome ingredients. Simple and delicious!

Grocery Store Finds: December 2017

Ready to see the new items that ended up in my cart this month? Check out this dietitian’s grocery store finds!
Grocery Store Finds via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #grocerystorefinds #rdchat #rdapproved #healthy
I know, I know.. technically it’s already January 2018. I took some time off the past two weeks to enjoy time with my friends and family during the holiday season. When I sat down this morning to plan out my week ahead, I noticed I never finished writing this post. These new items for my Grocery Store Finds are coming to you fashionably late.

88 Acres Pumpkin Seed Butter:

Grocery Store Finds via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen - 88 acres pumpkin seed butter #nutfree #nongmo #glutenfree #healthyfats #spread #pumpkin
I learned about 88 acres a couple years ago when they first launched. Working with children in cooking classes, food allergies are always a concern, with nuts being the most common food allergies among the students I have worked with. I started swapping in 88 Acres pumpkin seed and sunflower seed butters when any of my recipes called for nut butter. All of 88 Acres products are nut free. Anyone who has a food allergy knows how challenging it can be at times. 88 Acres is making that much simpler for you with their products being allergen friendly.
88 Acres is sharing the love with YOU and providing you with a 15% discount on all orders from their online store. Just use the code RDELISH (all caps) at checkout!

Food for Life – Ezekiel 4:9 Cereal:

Grocery Store Finds via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen - Ezekiel 4:9 cereal #foodforlife #nosugaradded #wholegrains #fiber
I’ve been on a total yogurt kick lately. I love adding a crunch to my yogurt and wanted to switch it up from my typical nuts/seeds or granola, so this Ezekiel cereal caught my eye. I tried their bread before, but never their cereal. They kind of remind me of grape nuts. I like the additional crunch they provide. Plus, the real winner is, when I topped my yogurt and berries with them for the next day, they didn’t get soggy! Did I forget to tell you, they also have <1 gram of sugar too!

Halos:

Grocery Store Finds via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen - Halos #orange #citrus #snack #vitaminC
If you follow me on Instagram, you know my love for Halos. Halos are different than clementines, as they are California mandarins. I’ve noticed they are much easier to peel, as the rind begins to break away from the sweet little segments as they ripen. Halos are in their peak season (November – April), so don’t miss out on this prime time! They have been my go-to snack mid-afternoon when I am usually craving something a little sweet! I’ve even noticed Halos are now being sold in Starbucks with two in a pack. I love that these options are readily available.

Trader Joe’s Organic Creamy Tomato Soup:

Grocery Store Finds via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen - TJ's Tomato Soup #TraderJoes #TJs #tomatosoup #soup #tomato #glutenfree
I typically always make my own soup, but I bought this soup a while ago and saw it sitting in my pantry. One night I was in need of a quick dinner, so it was tomato soup and a grilled cheese (made with Dave’s Killer Bread). I was pleasantly surprised! Yes, the sodium was higher than I would have liked it to be, but overall had good taste. 6.5/10 I would buy again. I always keep items like this in the pantry for really quick dinner or in a pinch when I haven’t gone grocery shopping or meal prepped. I just prefer my own homemade soups 🙂

What products should I search for next? I’d love to hear about some of your favorite grocery store finds! E-mail me at rdeliciouskitchen[at]gmail.com

Grocery Store Finds: November 2017

How is everyone recovering from the Thanksgiving weekend? After a fun-filled weekend with friends, family, and lots and lots of food, I was ready to stock my kitchen with new Grocery Store Finds.
Grocery Store Finds via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #grocerystorefinds #rdchat #rdapproved #healthy
Guys .. I did my first Facebook Live last week. I have no problem speaking in front of a large crowd, but it was such a different experience talking to a screen, with anyone really tuning in to view. If you watched, you might be able to tell I was a little nervous. I feel like this first one broke the ice and I’m ready to dive in and do more.
Would you be interested in chatting with me on Facebook Live discussing my Grocery Store Finds each month? Let me know! Comment in the comment section below!

Siete Grain Free Tortilla Chips:

Grocery Store Finds: Siete Grain Free Tortilla Chips via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #rdapproved #rdchat #grocerystore #supermarketpick #grocerystorefind #healthyfood #glutenfree #grainfree
Out of Veronica Garza’s, Co-Founder & President of Siete, own health needs adopted a grain free diet. Coming from a Mexican-American family, she wasn’t satisfied eating what used to be enjoyed on a flour tortilla, now on a lettuce leaf, decided to develop her own grain free tortillas. These grain free tortilla chips use cassava flour, which is a root vegetable and naturally gluten and grain free. Cassava contains significant amounts of calcium, phosphorus, manganese, iron and potassium, and a moderate amount of protein. These have my go-to tortilla chips for when I’m craving chips and guac.

Rebbl Protein Cold-Brew Coffee:

Grocery Store Finds: Rebbl Protein Coffee via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #rdapproved #rdchat #grocerystore #supermarketpick #grocerystorefind #healthyfood #glutenfree #dairyfree
Whenever I hit the grocery store mid-morning, I always grab a Rebbl Protein Cold-Brew Coffee for a little pick me up. They say you should never go to the grocery store hungry.. truth. This is how this drink first ever ended up in my shopping cart. It is dairy free and uses coconut milk as the base of the cold brew. The protein source is pea protein and sunflower protein. It also includes “super-herbs” of maca, reishi, and ashwagandha.

Panera Bread at Home Turkey Chili with Beans:

Grocery Store Finds: Panera From Home Turkey Chili via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #rdapproved #rdchat #grocerystore #supermarketpick #grocerystorefind #healthyfood #panera
I recently learned how extensive Panera at Home’s grocery store line is. Did you know they have all your favorite coffees, bread, salad dressing, and soup available at your local grocery store? They kindly sent me a few items to try. This turkey chili with beans was pleasantly surprised how delicious and filling this chili was. One serving packs in 11 grams of fiber and 22 grams of protein. I will definitely keep this in stock in my refrigerator. It was such an easy grab and go portable and portion controlled lunch.

Dream Greens Baby Watercress:

Grocery Store Finds: AeroFarm Dream Greens via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #rdapproved #rdchat #grocerystore #supermarketpick #grocerystorefind #healthyfood #verticalgarden
Last spring, I had the opportunity to visit AeroFarms where they grow Dream Greens, the world’s largest vertical farm. They grow delicious, nutritious leafy greens and herbs without sunlight and soil. Their crops get the perfect amount of moisture and nutrients misted directly onto their roots in a completely controlled environment. They take indoor vertical farming to a new level of precision and productivity with minimal environmental impact. The location I visited was an old paintball facility in the heart of the city of Newark, NJ. It was amazing to see the rows and rows of the vertical garden flourishing in the heart of a big city. The baby watercress has become one of my favorites because it’s little hint of spice, similar to arugula.

Oatmega Bars:

Grocery Store Finds: Oatmega via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #rdapproved #rdchat #grocerystore #supermarketpick #grocerystorefind #healthyfood #healthybar #protein #proteinbar
I’m a sucker for bars, mainly because they are just so darn convenient sometimes. One of my clients actually introduced me to Oatmega bars. I’ve heard of them but never tried them. She was raving about the chocolate mint flavor she had that afternoon when I spotted this bar at the store, I, of course, had to try it! What’s different about these bars, is that they contain heart-healthy fish oil. I was a little hesitant to try them because I thought I was going to taste the fish oil with the chocolate mint flavor. Definitely not the case. I think they are the first bar on the market that adds fish oil to their bars.

Grocery Store Finds: October 2017 – Pumpkin Edition

There are so many pumpkin flavored items saturating the grocery store shelves during this time of year, so I consulted the ultimate pumpkin guru for this pumpkin edition grocery store find round up.

I’m excited to collaborate with pumpkin loving dietitian, Maggie Michalczyk. You might know her on Instagram as @onceuponapumpkin. I thought I was pumpkin obsessed, but this girl takes it to a whole other level. I rely on her to keep me up to date on all the new pumpkin items hitting the grocery store shelves. Without further ado, I’ll let Maggie take it away with her pumpkin edition Grocery Store Picks for this month.

____________

As I sit down to write this, I’m finding it harder than I thought to narrow down my list of best pumpkin grocery store finds. As you know if you’ve walked into any grocery store since August, pumpkin spice mania is in nearly in every aisle in some way, shape or form. I’m talking chips, cheese, meats (yes, meats!), and air fresheners just to name a few. And while I’ll try anything pumpkin once, this list is full of staples in my pumpkin pantry that are worth hunting down this pumpkin season! I included some for their high nutrition, and some for their uniqueness and pumpkin taste alone. The bottom line is, I’m “pump”-ed when I go to the grocery store this time of year, and the pumpkin possibilities are truly endless!

Trader Joe’s Pumpkin & Butternut Squash Bisque

A new player in the pumpkin game, this bisque joins Trader Joe’s collection of over 150 pumpkin products! I have to admit, I was not a huge fan of their pumpkin soup. Not because it wasn’t good, but because it was not as thick as I would expect pumpkin soup to be. This bisque was the answer to my prayers and is made with ingredients I would use if I was making it at home like ginger, carrot, and no heavy cream. I’ve been topping it with a little parmesan cheese and fresh black pepper.

Kracker Pumpkin Seed Crisps

These “crisps” can best be described as large crackers, and I’ve been eating them with avocado on top as avocado “toasts” for some time now! Perfectly square shaped and extra crunchy because of the pumpkin seeds baked right in, these crackers also contain whole wheat, oats, flax seeds, and sunflower seeds! At 4 grams of proteins per serving, they are great to top with your favorite spreads. You can find them year-round at Whole Foods.

365 Organic Pumpkin & Sage Farro Pilaf

New for 2017 at Whole Foods, it took me some time to track down this pumpkin pilaf, and boy am I glad I did! Not only is it ready in less than 20 minutes, but I found it to be just as good the next day as leftovers. With notes of sage, black pepper and turmeric, I found it to be full of fall flavor and the ideal side dish to a meal on a cozy autumn night. I paired it with a glass of red wine too, another highly recommend accompaniment!

Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Soup Crackers

In my opinion, they should drop the word “soup” in the name because these crackers can be eaten in so many other ways! With a slightly salty, pumpkin taste, I found them to be slightly addicting too! Paired with cheese, or dipped in hummus you can’t go wrong eating them in just about any way you like! These end up in my cart every time I’m shopping at Trader Joe’s this time of year, and I will buy a few extra boxes for when they are no longer available! Check out the other exclusive TJ’s pumpkin items I’m loving here.

Simple Mills Pumpkin Muffin & Bread Mix

If you don’t have the time (or energy!) to whip up pumpkin bread from scratch—fear not! Simple mills has your back in more ways than one because this mix makes both muffins and bread. Great for gluten-free pumpkin lovers because it’s made with almond and coconut flour. This mix tastes as indulgent as your coffee house pumpkin bread but with only 6 grams of sugar per serving (1 muffin or slice of bread), you can feel good about having it all fall long. Trust me, you’ll be hooked after your first batch! Find it at Whole Foods, or Fresh Thyme.

Health Warrior Pumpkin Seed Bar

Also new for 2017, Health Warrior has an entire line of bars that have pumpkin seeds as their first ingredient. Honey and spices are the only other things used to bring out the bold flavors of dark chocolate, honey cracked pepper and turmeric and cinnamon spice. I haven’t seen any other bar that makes pumpkin seeds the star, or with this simple of an ingredient list. I’ve even cut one up and used it as a salad topper for an extra crunch!

Califia Farm Pumpkin Spice Latte Cold Brew

This coffee is definitely one of the pumpkin items I look forward to most when it comes back for the season! Maybe it’s the seasonably festive packaging (let’s admit, sometimes we FALL for it!), or the smooth pumpkin-y taste of this cold brew, that makes it so enjoyable to drink. It’s not overly sweet like some pumpkin drinks can be, and definitely a fun treat in the morning (I usually have a little cup in addition to my coffee!) Bonus that it’s soy-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, carrageenan-free, non-GMO, and vegan—making it a pumpkin coffee that those with certain dietary restrictions or preferences can enjoy too. Win, win!

Curious to see what ended up this dietitian’s cart this month?

Finally, the weather in NJ is starting to cool down and it’s starting to feel like Fall. Fall is my favorite season. I love the crisp cool weather, wearing scarves and boots, and the seasonal food! Bring on the apples, squashes, and hearty soups and stews.

I’m sure going to be busy in the kitchen this season. While not everything I eat is a full recipe, I pair items together to create well-balanced meals and snacks. Ready to see what was in my cart this month?

StarKist Selects:Grocery Store Finds: StarKist Tuna Selects via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen

I first learned about StarKist Selects at the Today’s Dietitian conference. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish) at least two times (two servings) a week. It is a struggle for many to eat fish because they feel intimidated by cooking it. I hear that a lot in my sessions, that clients would like to consume more fish, but they don’t want to prepare it. StarKist Selects Wild-Caught Pink Salmon in extra virgin olive oil is the perfect solution.
In a shelf stable single serving pack, this is a fish solution for on the go and can easily be packed to incorporate in a meal. I like adding these on top of my salads. Since it is packed in extra virgin olive oil, it doesn’t dry out, plus creates a less of a need to add any salad dressing.

Oui by Yoplait:

Grocery Store Finds: Yoplait Oui via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen
New Oui yogurt by Yoplait brings me back to my trip to France. Oui is a French style yogurt with simple ingredients and a great taste. The texture is silky smooth. I was scraping every last bit from the jar. I was curious why they are in glass jars, so I did a little research. The glass jars are not only recyclable and great for reuse, but it also protects the integrity of the yogurt’s texture during the production and shipping process. Right now, I’m recycling my jars to grow herbs on my kitchen windowsill. Thanks Oui for sending me some samples to try!

Nourish Snacks:

Grocery Store Finds: Nourish Snacks via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen
I almost didn’t recognize Nourish Snacks on the grocery shelf when I strolled up the aisle. I’ve talked about Nourish Snacks before. They are now offered in larger bags. Nearly 25% of our daily calories come from snacks, so it’s important we make these snacks count, nutritionally. Joy Bauer, RDN, nutrition expert of the TODAY Show and founder of Nourish Snacks, set out to create a nutritious grab-and-go snack that can work for any kind of snacker.

New Siggi’s Flavors:

Grocery Store Finds: Siggi's via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen
Have you seen the new Siggi’s flavors? Yes, I know I just was chatting about another yogurt above. What can I say? I like variety. I was too excited not to share Siggi’s newest flavors: 4% banana & cinnamon and 9% chocolate. I’m obsessed!

Pumpkin Bars Selection:

Grocery Store Finds: Pumpkin Bars via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen
It’s not Fall without everything being pumpkin, right? I know this isn’t just one item for this grocery store pick, but they all have the common seasonal theme: pumpkin! When choosing bars, think about when and why you are having them. Are they for a quick snack? Will they be part of a meal? Are you looking for a boost of protein? Not all bars are created equal. Look for wholesome ingredients without an excess amount of added sugar and think about how they are going to fuel you.
This is a little bit of a teaser for you. Next month, pumpkin guru Maggie from @onceuponapumpkin is taking over for a grocery store tour: pumpkin edition!
What new products have you discovered? What should I be on the lookout for next?

Grocery Store Finds: August 2017

I found so many great new Grocery Store Finds this month!

A reader recently e-mailed me about where I go grocery shopping for all of these items each month. I honestly shop at a variety of grocery stores. I live in northern NJ, so I shop at my local grocery store (ShopRite – where I also previously worked as a Supermarket RD), Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Dean’s Natural Market. A Wegmans just opened up near me and I will be surely venturing there soon!
If you are having trouble finding any of these items where you live, try going to the product’s website and search “store locator” to see where the nearest grocery store is carrying that item.
Ready to see what I picked up from the store this month?

Dave’s Killer Bread Bagels:

Grocery Store Finds: Dave's Killer Bread Bagels - via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen
I’ve told you about Dave’s Killer Bread before here on the blog. Now, Dave’s Killer Bread came out with protein packed bagels! Their bagels range from 11-13 grams of protein per bagel. Made with whole grains and wholesome ingredients, these bagels will keep you full all morning. I tried the cinnamon raisin bagel with a smear of natural peanut butter on top. I have to try the Epic Everything flavor next!

La Colombe Draft Lattes:Grocery Store Finds: La Colombe Draft Latte - via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen

I learned about La Colombe from latte lover, Kylie, over at ImmaEatThat. Then when I saw Alissa rave about it too, I picked it up at Whole Foods when I saw it on the shelves. At first, I was confused about this product. How is a latte in a can? These draft lattes have the same full taste and texture of a chilled latte, complete with a frothy layer of silky foam. Draft Latte is made with real ingredients like nutrient-rich and lactose-free milk and cold-pressed espresso. It’s naturally sweet with no sugar added. They just came out with a Pumpkin Spice Draft Latte!! It’s available online right now, but I hope it will be hitting the shelves at the grocery store soon. I have to try it!

Caulipower Crust:

Grocery Store Finds: CauliPower: Cauliflower Pizza Crust - via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen
Cauliflower crust pizza just got simpler to enjoy at home. While I do try to cook from scratch whenever I can, convenience sometimes wins. I love cauliflower crust pizza, but it does take extra effort and can be time-consuming for busy weeknights. Caulipower has just made creating a cauliflower crust pizza so much easier. Found in the frozen section, two come in one package. Load up with your favorite veggies toppings. More brands are now creating cauliflower crusts and I am interested in comparing. Be on the lookout for other cauliflower crusts to appear on the grocery store finds posts.

Humm! Hummus:

Grocery Store Finds: Humm! Hummus - via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen
Calling all hummus lovers! This new hummus flavor find has got me craving veggies for all my afternoon snacks because I want to dunk it into this delicious hummus. Humm! hummus has a caramelized onion flavor that is out of this world. They have plenty of other flavors too, but this one I’ve been hooked on all month. The hummus is silky smooth and packs in a ton of flavor.

Square Organics:
Grocery Store Finds: Square Bars - via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen

I’ve become very selective of the certain bars I eat and share on here. There are so many bars out there that are pretty much candy bars in disguise. Square Organics sent me some samples to try a variety of their flavors. I’ve shared my love for the chocolate coated mint flavor before. Each bar packs in 10 grams of protein. If I’m craving a sweet treat in the afternoon, these have been my bar of choice. A chocolate coated treat. Count me in. Want to try these? Square Organics gave RDelicious Kitchen readers a discount code “DELICIOUSKITCHEN” for 20% off your order online (+ free shipping!).

Have you tried any of these items before? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Grocery Store Finds: July 2017

Let’s take a peek what ended up in my grocery cart this month.

A blog reader (Hi Casey!) asked if I plan out my grocery finds in advance. The answer is no. I like to see what I come across that month and share some products that I love or new to me that I like to share with all of you. I enjoy learning about different products and their brand’s stories. It just so happens that 3 of these picks are from the dairy aisle this month.

Grocery Store Finds - GoMacro via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen

GoMacro Bars:

GoMacro is a family-owned company in the pursuit of health as a path of living in ourselves and nature with products that have a positive effect on the world. MacroBars are cold-pressed, nut-butter based bars. Made from simple, clean ingredients, all MacroBars are certified vegan, gluten-free, organic, R.A.W., C.L.E.A.N., kosher and non-GMO project verified. They have a combination of high-protein and plant-based ingredients that serve as the perfect way to keep you fueled throughout the day. So far, my favorites are the Balanced Goodness (granola + coconut) and Everlasting Joy (coconut + almond butter + chocolate chips).
GoMacro let me in on the inside scoop to use the code “Macro30” for 30% off and free shipping on your first order! Can’t decide what flavor to try first? Get the sampler pack!
Grocery Store Finds - Fairlife via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen

Fairlife Milk:

Fairlife milk uses a patented cold-filtration process (the same process that removes impurities from water). The milk from Fairlife’s dairy farms flows through soft filters, filtering into five components (water, butterfat, protein, vitamins & minerals, lactose) and then recombine them in different proportions. The end result milk is concentrated with protein, more calcium, less sugar, and lactose-free. I’ve been using fairlife in my morning smoothies now instead of almond milk and the extra protein, I’ve noticed has kept me fuller, longer.
Grocery Store Finds - Chobani Smooth via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen

Chobani Smooth:

Chobani just came out with a new line – Chobani Smooth. Chobani was kind enough to send over some samples for me to try. It has a smoother and lighter texture than traditional Greek yogurt. The new Chobani Smooth yogurts are made with only natural ingredients, 25% less sugar, and twice the protein. I love that this new line uses no artificial flavors or sweeteners. This yogurt would be the perfect start for someone trying to transition from regular yogurt to Greek yogurt (more protein!) as the texture is light and smooth like regular yogurt. I enjoy the variety of flavors so I can go with whatever flavor I am craving that day.
Grocery Store Finds - Cabot Slices via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen

Cabot Cracker Cut Slices:

Cabot has made snacking even more convenient. Now they sell their delicious cheddar pre-sliced. I don’t know about you, but I can never get the slices very even when I slice it from the large block. The cracker cut slices make preparing party patter and quick snacks super simple. The packaging is easily resealable to keep cheese fresh in between uses.

Grocery Store Finds: June 2017

Curious what ended up in my grocery cart this month?

I’m sure you’ve heard by now that Amazon has bought Whole Foods. What are your thoughts on the future of grocery shopping? I’m really intrigued of what’s to come!
This month I did most of my shopping at Whole Foods and Dean’s Natural Market. Any time I stroll through both of those stores, something new always ends up in my cart.

Grocery Store Finds: RD approved Health-Ade

My birthday is in June and Dean’s helped me celebrate my birthday all month with 1/2 off Health-Ade ALL MONTH. This is hands down my favorite kombucha. I am still on the hunt for the Blood Orange-Carrot-Ginger and Reishi Chocolate flavors. Follow your gut and try Health-Ade. Health-Ade is the only commercial kombucha fermented 100% in glass to prevent plastic and metal leaching and it’s hand-crafted in super-small 2.5 gallon batches for premium quality. Kombucha is fermented tea, that naturally contains probiotics, which is great for gut health.

Grocery Store Finds: RD approved - Barney Butter

Barney Butter

I was lucky to win Joy, Food, Sunshine’s Barney Butter contest. I was SO excited when this package arrived at my doorstep. I am a true nut butter lover. There is pretty much not a day without nut butter being part of a meal of snack. Each almond butter blend packs in a ton of flavor without a ton of added sugar. Barney Butter is regularly available in grocery stores. I just got my hands on their single serve packs. Perfect for traveling!
Grocery Store Finds: RD approved - Jar Goods

Jar Goods

I don’t buy marinara very often because my family always makes it from scratch and there is always some stored in my freezer, but I was completely out! When I was strolling the aisles at Dean’s this jar caught my eye because it was locally (to me) made in Hoboken, NJ. Made with simple ingredients, this packs in great flavor. It’s not grandma’s gravy, but I will definitely be buying again.
Grocery Store Finds: RD approved - Hippeas

Hippeas

Have you seen Hippeas? I was craving a crunchy snack and these chickpea puffs were pretty good. They reminded me of a healthier Cheeto. I cannot even remember the last time I ate one of those. The white cheddar flavor was subtle, but it curbed my crunchy snack craving. I think it’s pretty cool companies are finding creative ways to add more pulses into foods.
Grocery Store Finds: RD approved - BRM to-go

Bob’s Red Mill

Bob’s Red Mill never fails me. I love these little to-go cups with no sugar added and it has flax and chia already added in. These have been lifesavers for eating on the go and also for traveling. Pair with some fruit and a PB packet, you have yourself a filling meal.

Grocery Store Finds: May 2017

Have you been wondering where my Supermarket RD’s Picks have been? I started that series when I was working as a retail registered dietitian. Since leaving that position in February, I’ve missed sharing my favorite new finds as I stroll the aisles at the grocery store.  In my new position, I am still giving grocery store tours helping clients navigate the grocery store, learning to read food labels, cut through marketing scams and discover the healthiest route to help you stick with their nutrition goals.
As many of us are extremely busy, grocery shopping trips have turned into just a quick errand. You’ve probably walked by these items before. Maybe now they will catch your eye next time you are at the store. Each month, I am going to share with you a few of my favorite new finds. Every brand has a story and I am hoping with this series, I can help you learn a little more about these items too! If you have any recommendations, shoot them my way!
RD Approved Grocery Store Finds
Dear Purely Elizabeth,
How do you get your clusters so perfect? I’ve always been a Purely Elizabeth granola fan because of their wholesome ingredients and low sugar clusters. This new flavor, chocolate sea salt probiotic granola flavor caught my eye. Then I became a little more curious. How are there probiotics in granola? Probiotics are killed when exposed to heat. Purely Elizabeth uses GanedenBC30(A non-GMO, vegan strain of probiotic), a patented strain of probiotics, shown to survive the baking process. Eating two servings a day of purely granola will get you maximum probiotic benefits to help support a healthy immune and digestive system. I’ve been enjoying my granola with Siggi’s and berries.
RD Approved Grocery Store FindsLa Terra Fina sent me over some samples to try for Memorial Day weekend. They have three flavors of creamy Greek yogurt dips: Spinach & Kale, Spinach Artichoke & Parmesan, and Spinach & Parmesan. With Greek yogurt as the base, they have 45% less fat and calories than your traditional spreads. What I really like about them, is that you can enjoy them both warm and chilled. They were a hit with my family & friends this past weekend.

I am predicting that these, Beyond Meat: The Beyond Burger, are going to be the hottest new item this summer. I’ve recently stocked up at Whole Foods when I saw them because they fly off the shelves. I can’t even begin to describe how delicious these burgers were. Packed with 20 grams of plant-based protein, it will be a great meatless option for grilling. The primary source of protein in The Beyond Burger™ comes from (soy, gluten, and GMO-free) peas. The Beyond Burger looks, cooks, and tastes like a fresh beef burger. It has all the juicy, meat deliciousness of a traditional burger, but comes with the upsides of a plant-based meal. When I was cooking it, I was wondering how the juices were running red in my grill pan just like a beef burger would. With a little research, I learned that it was actually beet juice. RD Approved Grocery Store FindsI finally was able to find Perfect Bar‘s new flavors! Hello, Dark Chocolate Almond & Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter with sea salt. These have become a staple afternoon snack for me when I know I am hitting the gym after work and won’t be eating dinner until late. They remind me of cookie dough. Note that they are found a refrigerated section of your grocery store.
RD Approved Grocery Store FindsIt’s never been easier to fit protein into your morning breakfast, even when on the go. BelVita just came out with a protein soft baked biscuit with 10 grams of protein per biscuit. When I was at Today’s Dietitian Spring Symposium this month, Lauren Harris-Pincus of Nutrition Starring You had a great session about the importance of breakfast. The composition of your breakfast does matter. Look to include protein. I like to pair these biscuits with yogurt and a piece of fruit for a filling and satisfying breakfast.

Confession: I have 7 nut butter jars open at the currently at the moment. I LOVE nut butters. Nut butters make an appearance minimum 1-2 times in a day within my meals and snacks.

I stopped by Betsy’s Best booth at FNCE this year on the expo floor and I was blown away by the flavor of these nut & seed butters. Each variety has chia seeds mixed right in. I usually top my peanut butter toast with chia seeds in the morning, so this takes away that extra step! Plus, the extra addition of cinnamon or cardamom added in makes it extra delicious.
